Can anyone become an EMT, AEMT, or EMT-P?

Note that the processes for state application and National Registry (NR) application are separate and distinct. You must pass the NR exam to become eligible for state certification. 

NREMT Prerequisites for Certification:

  1. Education Requirement: Successful completion of a state-approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course or completion of a higher level state-approved EMS course that meets or exceeds the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards for the Emergency Medical Technician (NHTSA, 2021).
    1. This institution offers Texas state-approved EMT, AEMT, and EMPT-P courses.
  2. Have a current AHA BLS for "Healthcare Provider" or equivalent credential.
    1. We provide the opportunity for our students to obtain this credential, if not already held, while enrolled with us.
  3. Successful completion of a State EMS Office approved assessment of psychomotor skills within the past 24 months.
    1. Our EMT students complete the psychomotor skills assessment during their attendance at their Skills Lab.
  4. Successful completion of the National Registry EMT cognitive examination within 24 months.
  5. Meet eligibility requirements of the Terms of Certification and Criminal Conviction Policy.

Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas DSHS) Prerequisites for State Certification:

  1. You must be at least 18 years old
  2. Have a high school diploma or GED certificate 
  3. Successfully complete a DSHS approved EMS training course
  4. Submit a completed EMS Personnel Certification application and fee
  5. Pass the National Registry exam
  6. Submit fingerprints for Texas/FBI criminal history check. 
  7. Paramedics – Texas has two levels for Paramedics: EMT-Paramedic certification for those who have completed a paramedic course, but have not completed a degree and Paramedic Licensure for those with a two year EMS degree or a four year degree in any field.

If you want to work in Texas, you must gain state certification by following the application instructions below. You are allowed to take the NR exam prior to submitting your state application.
