What Does "Alternate Signer" Mean, and Who Qualifies?

This article is best used after a student has attended, or is currently attending, a clinical or field shift, as a reference to support them during the checkout process. When a student begins checking out of their shift, they will be prompted to start the end-of-shift evaluation process. The first step in this process is completing the Shift Summary page.

The Shift Summary page must be signed by your preceptor or other individual at the site to verify a student’s attendance at the shift. This is NOT the preceptor evaluation and does NOT serve as verification of the patients listed above.

The Shift Summary should typically be signed by your preceptor. However, in the rare case that the preceptor is unavailable, another credentialed healthcare professional or administrator who can confirm your attendance may sign in their place. If you are obtaining a signature from someone other than your preceptor, please check the box on the Shift Summary page labeled, “My preceptor is not available...” and select or enter the information for the alternate signer. The alternate signer should have direct knowledge of your presence during the shift.
