What Does "Alternate Signer" Mean, and Who Qualifies?

InfoThis article is best used after a student has attended, or is currently attending, a clinical or field shift, as a reference to support them during the checkout process. When a student begins checking out of their shift, they will be prompted to start the end-of-shift evaluation process. The first step in this process is completing the Shift Summary page.
The Shift Summary page must be signed by your preceptor or other individual at the site to verify a student’s attendance at the shift. This is NOT the preceptor evaluation and does NOT serve as verification of the patients listed above.

The Shift Summary should typically be signed by your preceptor. However, in the rare case that the preceptor is unavailable, another credentialed healthcare professional or administrator who can confirm your attendance may sign in their place. If you are obtaining a signature from someone other than your preceptor, please check the box on the Shift Summary page labeled, “My preceptor is not available...” and select or enter the information for the alternate signer. The alternate signer should have direct knowledge of your presence during the shift.
WarningIf your preceptor is available, DO NOT click the checkbox (and do not allow your preceptor to click the checkbox) that says “My preceptor is not available.” Selecting this option will prevent your preceptor from completing your evaluation and may result in your shift not receiving credit. Alternate signers are only acceptable in true emergencies where your preceptor is unavailable. If you use an alternate signer, you must email support@axoneducation.com immediately so our faculty can determine whether your shift is eligible for credit.

IMPORTANT
If an alternate signer completes your Shift Summary page, the system will automatically bypass the preceptor evaluation and proceed directly to the student evaluation, which you are required to complete. In this case, you must email support@axoneducation.com immediately to report the missing preceptor evaluation. Be sure to include an explanation and any relevant evidence, if available.

If you encounter a technology issue that prevents you from completing the checkout process, you are required to notify Axon immediately, as well.

Failure to complete the full checkout process may result in you not receiving credit for the shift. However, even if the student notifies Axon of an inability to obtain a requirement, there is no guarantee that the shift will count. Instead, it means that our faculty will review the request before making a final decision.
